Healthy Active Living

The Healthy Active Living Courses are designed to expose students to a variety of enjoyable team and individual activities where they will refine and apply movement skills and develop strategies and tactics. In addition, students will engage themselves in fitness sessions in order to set and achieve realistic personal goals. Social skills and safety are also emphasized in a healthy interactive team environment. Healthy Living classes will involve the acquisition of knowledge and skills to promote positive lifestyle choices for now and in the future. The overall goal is to develop a commitment to lifelong involvement in an active and healthy lifestyle.

Sample Units of Study and Activities

MOVEMENT SKILLS:
*Students apply movement skills in a variety of activities

INVASION/TERRITORY:
*Basketball, Soccer, Floor Hockey, Flag-football, Handball, Lacrosse, Ultimate, Tchoukball

NET / WALL:
*Badminton, Volleyball, Pickleball, Paddleball, Tennis, Takraw

STRIKING / FIELDING:
*Three pitch

TARGET: *Bocce, Curling

STRATEGIES AND TACTICS:
*Students apply strategies and tactics in game and tournaments situations
*Students demonstrate understanding of movement principles, sport rules and guidelines

Success and Goal Setting

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION *Daily effort and initiative *Provision of proper attire

FITNESS
*Personal assessment and goal setting - cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular endurance, muscular strength, healthy body composition and flexibility
*Development of a Fitness Portfolio

SAFETY
*Participate safely in daily class activities
*Understand the Ontario Safety Guidelines
*Follow class safety guidelines

HEALTH
*Understand concepts related to a variety of topics 8Assess personal health behaviors
*Research and present health material
