Gr. 7 Vaccination Clinic - Oct. 16

Grade 7 & 8 Parent Open House - Oct. 11th

PECI is excited to host our first Grade 7 & 8 Parent Open House on October 11tth from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.  The evening is an opportunity to come together for a meet and greet with the staff in the Junior Cafeteria, hear some helpful tips for being a Panther Parent and then proceed up to see the classrooms where your student(s) learn.

We respectfully remind parents that this is not a parent/guardian/teacher interview, rather a social engagement for everyone to enjoy.  Parents and guardians seeking a specific discussion with a teacher regarding their student are requested to contact the school to book an appointment.

Research shows that students who have parents/guardians who are engaged in their learning are more successful in school.  In short, when it matters to you, it matters to our students.  We hope you are able to join us on October 11th,  Happy Fall until we meet again.  #BetterTogether

PECI School Councils for 2017-18 - A New Structure!

PECI is excited to invite all interested Panther parents and guardians to join school council for the upcoming school year.  As the composition of our school has diversified, we have changed our school council structure to better meet the needs of our parents.  This year, we will be hosting two school councils - one for grade 7-8 parents/guardians and one for grade 9-12 parents/guardians.  This will allow time for sharing and discussion of items that pertain most to your affected students.

Our first meetings will be this coming Tuesday, September 26th.

Grade 7-8 Parents:  6:00 - 7:00 pm

Grade 9-12 Parents:  7:00 - 8:00 pm

By tradition, we adhere to a one hour meeting schedule to honour the time of all members.  Our parent voices matter and we encourage new and returning members to please join us.  We know that we are better together!

Panther Programmers Proceed to the Next Round

Two teams of PECI programmers took part in a board-wide computer programming contest requiring them to program a computer to solve a series of challenging tasks.  At the end of the competition our grade 12 team, consisting of Iain Cameron, Ryan Haskin, and Jake Sullivan had captured 2nd place overall, and the grade 11 team of Nolan Belnap, Wyatt Gilbert, Hannah Hungerford, and Patrik Kelemen placed 3rd.  As a result of these finishes the teams have been invited to move on to represent our school board at an Eastern Ontario Regional Contest to be held at Queen's University at the end of April.

Thank you to coach Mr. Kulenkamp for your support and leadership in organizing this event for the District!  It is great to see our students excelling in critical & creative thinking. #HPECompetencies #PantherPride

URGENT: Local Health Risk for Students

The local Hastings Prince Edward Health Unit has issued a high alert warning for students and youth in the local area.  In recent weeks, highly dangerous drugs have been discovered in circulation and have been linked to several youth deaths in Eastern Ontario.  These deaths have resulted from youth consuming drugs containing illicit fentanyl that appeared to be prescriptions that were illegally sold on the street as well as marijuana, cocaine and other street drugs that were laced.  These drugs and the risk they present are confirmed to be present in our region.  These drugs are highly addictive and in many cases deadly even in small amounts; the chance of over-dosing is extremely high.

As always, the best decision is to avoid the consumption of any illegal or street drugs as that is really the only true way to be safe.  If you do make the choice to use drugs or you believe someone has slipped you a drug at a party and you begin to feel ill, contact help immediately- DO NOT WAIT TO SEE IF THE EFFECTS WEAR OFF.  Similarly, if you see someone who has consumed something and they are acting strangely, show your caring by contacting help or calling 911 immediately.  You need to know that fentanyl is NOT a second chance drug and not something to take a risk with.

All opioids prescription and non-prescription have a risk of overdose. Opioids are a depressant drug, which means that they slow down the part of the brain that controls breathing. Overdose of opioids can result in death because breathing stops.

Students are encouraged to read more from the Hastings Prince Edward Health Unit by clicking here.

Parents are also encouraged to read more by clicking here.  The Health Unit has issued a letter to parents that can be viewed by clicking here.

Panthers...be safe, live clean & be well.  As always, look out for one another.

We stress that it is never acceptable or condoned to take illegal drugs.  We want our students to be well educated regarding the risks that exist in the local Hastings Prince Edward area and how they can help others who may become at risk.  This message is shared in partnership with the Hastings Prince Edward Health Unit as we work together to keep our students safe, healthy, prepared and empowered for the possibilities of today and tomorrow.

PEC ARC Process Student Voice Collection

As you know, our school board is working through an Accommodation Review Process for schools in Prince Edward County and PECI is part of that process.

The preliminary recommendation is:  Close Pinecrest Memorial Elementary School and Queen Elizabeth School (Picton) and consolidate students at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute for September 2017.  Close Sophiasburg Central School and move students to Prince Edward Collegiate Institute for September 2018.  Close C.M.L. Snider School and Kente Public School and seek Ministry of Education funding/approval to build a new K-8 elementary school on the CML Snider property or in Wellington for September 2020.  Explore opportunities for community partnerships aligned with the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan priorities.
