On Wednesday June 11th, PECI held their Athletic Awards Banquet at the beautiful Regent Theatre. In 2013/2014, Panther athetes won 14 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 6 bronze medals. 36% of all PECI students played at least 1 sport, which is over 200 athletes! 44% of PECI staff coached a team and students played more than 3600 minutes of lunch time intramural sports. Our junior boys volleyball team won a COSSA silver medal. Our senior boys basketball team won 30 games this year. Our boys baseball team advanced to OFSAA for the third time in four years. Our track and field team qualified 3 grade 9 athletes for OFSAA and we had a tennis superstar fly in all the way from Belgium to bring home COSSA gold! It’s safe to say that this was an exceptional year!

​During the month of May, four Entrepreneurship students hits the streets in Prince Edward County to raise funds for the first ever Persistent Panther Bursary. Local businesses donated to support two students who embodies the character that best represents Prince Edward Collegiate Institute in our community.

The PECI Relay for Life total is $22,386 for this year! That brings our yearly fundraising total to $36,391! This was a team effort and we can be proud to know that over the past 3 years our staff and students have eclipsed the $120,000 mark for charities in our community and around the world.

 Once again PECI showed their talent at the Skills Canada Competition held at Loyalist College on Thursday Feb 20. PECI students, Cynara Lewis and Brooke Morrow took home 1st and 3rd place respectively in Photography Skills. Students were instructed to photograph architecture and people at Loyalist College. The competition was based on several components including a portfolio, a matted print and then photos taken on the day of the event. They were judged on the aesthetics, technical skills and professionalism of their work. Our congratulations goes to Cynara and Brooke for their achievements. Cynara now has the opportunity to go on to compete at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in May.

In December our foods class learned about making their own baby food! They found out that is easy and often tasted better than the store bought jarred food. 

They did blind taste testing then learned to make our own and compared. We doubt they will ever ever do that again!

Guidance will be selling “Class of 2014” Grad Wear again this year.  Students will be able to purchase Grad Wear at lunch in the senior cafeteria or before or after school. All orders must be in by November 29th for the students and delivery should occur before the Holidays. 

The grade 10 Civics classes had the opportunity to have a Member of Parliament speak to them on a personal level.  Daryl Kramp the MP for Hastings and Prince Edward riding spent a morning answering very candid questions from the Civics students. Mr. Kramp answered questions that ranged from personal questions about his family and hobbies to questions about Parliament and his relationship with the Prime Minister.

Mr. Kramp spoke emphatically about the importance of young people getting involved in the future of Canada and taking an active part in shaping the future they want.  He spoke of the lack of voter turn-out in the 18-24 year old age group and how they represent a group larger than the group that actually elected the current government.

Mr. Kramp left the group with the important message that despite being in different political parties, there must be cooperation among politicians for good things to happen.

In the end the students were left with the impression that Daryl was just "ordinary people".

Tanya Blundell, speaking to Miss Moon's grade 10 Canadian history class, helps bring history alive through the use of primary documents, genealogical research and the telling of personal stories.

Student Council Card -- $10.00 A yearly fee payable each September. This fee buys the student a student card for access to school activities. Funds are used for student activities.

Printing Credits - $10.00 (recommended) -- In order to use the school printers, students purchase printing credits. We recommend $10 worth of credits to start the year.

Locks - $8.00 - Master Locks are available for purchase at the main office. All lockers MUST have a school supplied Master Lock on them.

The County Sustainability Group ( CSG ) provides up to 6 graduation bursaries for PECI students to further their education in an Environmental field of study..  Please help continue this support by participating in their upcoming rain barrel sale. PECI student and Wellington Pumpkinfest’s top local pumpkin was grown by 16-year-old Glen Huffman, as a 4H project. He finished seventh with his 1,048-pound entry. It was delivered to the Prime Minister’s residence by Glen’s parents Alvin and Sheila Huffman.  John notes this is the second year they have taken pumpkins to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but said this year’s specimens “are pretty ugly so it might be the last time we’re invited.”

Six PECI studentstoured Prince Edward County performing playwright JC Sulzenko’s play, exploring the impact of Alzheimer’s on those involved, What My Grandma Means to Say. The play featured Ben See as the grandson Jake, Alison Stenhouse as Grandma, Olivia Calver as the Nurse, and Sydnee Mulridge as the mother. Other PECI students who were involved were Cassidy Allison on video and multimedia design and Lachlan MacDonald on sound.
